The Baphomet is an aged trope in Western occultism and esoteric traditions, with links to the Templars and the Church of Satan. Described as a half-man, half-goat hermaphrodite figure, its likeness is perhaps the most easily identifiable occult symbol around. Eliphas Levi’s 1856 depiction of the Sabbatic Goat made flesh all preconceptions surrounding this being. While not being a real demon like our namesake Malphas from the Goetia, Baphomet carries some clout in Gnostic circles and people do worship him as a deity.
