John the Conqueror is a deity in the African-American Hoodoo belief system, he appears as an African prince, said to have ridden a giant crow called "Old Familiar." He was sold as a slave in the Americas. Despite his enslavement, his spirit was never broken. Outside of folklore, John the Conqueror is said to have united slaves against the slavers and escaped plantations. His legend has been whitewashed and his true lore remains firmly guarded by African-American scholars and practitioners.
